Across the Weald and within 15 minutes of The Brown Trout Inn, Lamberhurst. Scotney Castle is just across the A21 from Lamberhurst village.
One of the most beautiful and romantic of the National Trust gardens, Scotney Castle is something of a hidden gem. A gorgeous and picturesque estate garden is built around the unique centrepiece of the fourteenth century ruined castle, surrounded by its own moat.
The garden blooms through most of the year, beginning with early snowdrops, but reaching its peak in May and June with kalmia, rhododendrons and azaleas in riotous display. There is also the quarry garden, created in the nineteenth century by quarrying for the sandstone used for the new house.
Scotney Castle house and gardens have been developed and lovingly expanded over the last hundred and fifty years, with almost forty years under the care of the National Trust. This combination of wonderful gardens with the centrepiece of a wonderfully romantic castle make Scotney Castle one of the most beautiful location in south east England.
After a lovely day out exploring Scotney Castle, pop in to the Brown Trout for a drink and a bite to eat. |
